THERE AREN’T A LOT OF SPORTS CAMPS AVAILABLE
FOR A CHILD LIVING OVERSEAS ON A MILITARY BASE, BUT THE YOKO EXPRESS BASKETBALL TEAM
GIVES KIDS ON YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE A FRESH OPPORTUNITY TO LIVEN UP THEIR SUMMER AND LEARN
BASKETBALL WITH A 3-DAY TRAINING CAMP. THE IDEA FOR THE CAMP CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF A
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE FROM COACH STEVE HORTON. I WANTED TO HAVE SOMETHING FOR THEM TO DO
TO LEARN BASKETBALL BECAUSE AS MY OLDEST SON GREW UP HERE IN JAPAN WE DIDNT HAVE A LOT
OF BASKETBALL, JUST MWR. SO I WANTED TO TRY TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL. FIRST BUILD
FUNDAMENTALS AND HAVE SOME OF THE SAME THINGS THAT WE DO STATESIDE WITH BASKETBALL.
COACH HORTONS SON, STEVEN HORTON JUNIOR, ALSO HELPS COACH THE CAMP AND USES HIS EXPERIENCE
PLAYING COLLEGE BASKETBALL TO TEACH KIDS THE SKILLS HE WISHED HE HAD GROWING UP IN YOKOSUKA.
I WAS BORN AND RAISED HERE IN YOKOSUKA, I WENT TO KINNICK. I GRADUATED IN 2010. I REALLY
WANTED TO PLAY AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL BUT ITS REALLY HARD GETTING LOOKED AT HERE FROM COLLEGE
COACHES IN THE STATES. SO I HAD TO WORK REALLY HARD. IT’S REALLY PERSONAL TO ME BECAUSE
I WANT THESE KIDS TO HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY. I JUST HOPE THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS
WE’RE TEACHING THEM HERE TODAY, BASIC BASKETBALL, AND LEARN THAT YOU KNOW THEY JUST HAVE TO
WORK HARD, PRETTY MUCH, JUST TAKE AWAY FROM THAT AND AND GET BETTER.
GETTING BETTER IS DEFINITELY A GOAL FOR SOME OF THE KIDS AND THE COACHES OF THE CAMP GIVE
THE KIDS CONFIDENCE THAT WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING IS THE REAL DEAL.
I GO TO EVERY BASKETBALL CAMP EVERY YEAR. I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS ONE. IT’S ACTUALLY
PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING AND THEY CAN HELP YOU AND IF YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING
SOMETHING WRONG YOU CAN JUST GO UP TO THEM AND ASK THEM AND THEY’LL BE COMPLETELY HONEST
WITH YOU. THE CAMP, AND THE EXPERIENCE OF THE COACHES
THEMSELVES, HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING BACK TO BASICS. PETTY OFFICER KIRK PUTNAM.
