TORONTO 2015 PAN AM/PARAPAN AM GAMES Why is Handball a sport that North Americans should embrace? Handball is a really interesting sport. (Geoffroy Bessette-Collette, Right Wing, Team Canada, National Senior Men’s Handball) A lot of goals are scored and there is a lot of action. (Geoffroy Bessette-Collette, Right Wing, Team Canada, National Senior Men’s Handball) It’s a physical and fast-paced sport. It’s everything that North Americans like: (Dan Devlin, Back, Team Canada, National Senior Men’s Handball) …it’s fast, it’s physical, and it’s high scoring. (Dan Devlin, Back, Team Canada, National Senior Men’s Handball) Handball is a combination of different skills: (Jean-François Grimala, Head Coach, Team Canada, National Senior Men’s Handball) …running, jumping, throwing, physical contact, and spectacular plays. It’s like Water Polo on land, but extremely fast; and it’s unreal that we don’t know more about it here. So, I think it’s something that can be enjoyed by Canadians and Americans. It is a truly interesting sport. How excited is the team about playing on home court in 2015? Well it’s great, ‘cause we finally get to play in front of our home fans. We’re always constantly in Europe or South America… …so to have it here in Canada is going to be really special…to be able to have family and friends come. It’s really amazing for us to play in Canada, in Toronto, to play in front of our family… …my little boy is going to get to see me play before I retire. I’m not young anymore, so it’s really great… …and we want to show all Canadians our sport, so that they can see how beautiful and interesting this sport is. What is the goal of the team for TORONTO 2015? The last couple of Pan Am Games weren’t quite what we wanted. We finished 7th in Rio and we finished 5th in Mexico, but we’re hoping to medal this time around. I think we have a really good opportunity; we’ve continued to improve over the years… …and we’ll see what we can do. We’d really like to make a big surprise going forward. For us, it’s a great opportunity to play in Canada, in Toronto, at the Pan American Games… …to show Canadians their national athletes who play handball… …and who will be competing against the best Pan American teams to try to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. What is your strategy for success at the Pan Am Games in 2015? Well, our strategy is of course to give the best performance possible at the Pan American Games. Why haven’t we participated in any pre-Games Pan American competitions? We didn’t want to show our hand before the Toronto Games. That is our strategy, to be and unknown quantity and quality for the opposing teams. They remember what we were in 2011, at the last Games, but not what we will be in 2015. UNITED WE PLAY!
