NCAA TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN RIGHT NOW. WISCONSIN FLORIDA BAYLOR AND SOUTH CAROLINA PLAYING FOR A SPOT IN THE TIME FOUR. BUT A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HAS ALREADY BEEN WON BY A COLLEGE IN MIDTOWN THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF. CBS 2’S STEVE OVERMYER REPORTS THE STORY OF BERKLEY COLLEGE GOES DEEPER THAN JUST VICTORIES. Reporter: A SEASON THAT ENDS IN TRIUMPH. FOR BERKLEY COLLEGE THIS JOURNEY’S END IS MORE SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE OF WHERE THEY STARTED. THE DIFFERENCE FROM MY LIFE IS AMAZING. Reporter: BERKELEY SENIOR JEFF MEJIA RECENTLY DOCUMENTED A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE BERKELEY KNIGHTS. A TEAM OF MEN WHO HAVE OVERCOME HARDSHIPS. UNLIKE A TYPICAL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE, BERKELEY’S ATHLETES COMMUTE AFTER SCHOOL AND WORK. SINCE THE SCHOOL DOESN’T HAVE A GYM, THEY HAVE TO RENT A COURT FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE. MEJIA IS THE TEAM CAPTAIN. HE ALSO SPENT ONE YEAR LIVING IN A HOMELESS SHELTER. THAT SHOWED ME PERSEVERANCE AND BEING ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD AND SITUATIONS GET BETTER. ALL OF THEM FACE ADVERSITY. ALL THEIR LIVES. AND THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THIS. THEY DON’T HAVE FATHERS IN THEIR FAMILIES. MOTHERS ARE WORKING WITH THREE OR FOUR CHILDREN. SOME OF THEM HAVE KIDS OF THEIR OWN. IT MAKES THE WINNING EASIER BECAUSE YOU’RE FACING ADVERSITY IN EVERY GAME. Reporter: IF THERE’S A BASKETBALL BOUNCING SOMEWHERE IN THE FIVE BOROUGHS, CHRIS CHRISTIANSEN IS THERE TO FIND TALENT HELP STEER THEM OUT OF BAD SITUATIONS AND TEACH THEM TO THRIVE. I GO TO SOME PARKS THAT MAYBE NO ONE ELSE WILL GO TO. Reporter: NOT JUST RUTGER PARK OR WESTPORT. NO TALKING ABOUT PARKS WHERE, YOU KNOW, IT’S — IT’S ALMOST I DON’T BELONG THERE. [ LAUGHTER ] AND I WILL SIT THERE AND THEY WON’T KNOW ME. Reporter: HIS PLAYERS HAVE FOUND A PLACE WHERE THEY BELONG. AND WIN. THE KNIGHTS JUST COMPLETED A PERFECT SEASON GOING 29-0 AND WINNING THEIR 3rd STREET USCAA DIVISION 2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS CREATED A MINDSET THAT WE HAVE AND IT’S TO KEEP PERSEVERING. ALL THE ADVERSITY AND SACRIFICE THAT WE GO THROUGH WE JUST COMBINE IT TOGETHER AND PUT IT OUT ALL ON THE COURT. THAT’S WHY WE’RE SO SUCCESSFUL. Reporter: THEY SET THEIR GOALS AND ACHIEVE THEM AND LEARN THAT, THAT KIND OF SUCCESS STRETCHES BEYOND THE COURT. IN MANHATTAN, STEVE OVERMYER, CBS 2 SPORTS. THIS FOOTNOTE. THINGS ARE LOOKING GOOD FOR JEFF OFF THE COURT, AS WELL. HE HAS BEEN INTERNING AT A LOCAL BUSINESS BUT THEY WERE SO
