So before the ball is even served, you
should know what serve you can get to what serve you probably can’t get and
what serve your partner is supposed to get. So you basically need to understand
your range. You need to understand what your range is and what your partner
range is. The range is basically how much court
you can cover. Here are some characteristics of some players that
have really good range. You need to understand each player’s roles and
responsibilities You need to know the server, know what they’re trying to do
and know what they can’t do. You need to experience testing your range. Start in a
low athletic posture anticipating the ball and anticipating where the ball is
going. Here are some characteristics of some players that have poor range. Not
ready to move. Does not think about how much court to cover and doesn’t
experiment with testing the range. You want to always be open to experimenting
with your positioning on the court. If you are improving, then your starting
position should be changing. Also if you are struggling then your starting
position will change. So how good is your range. When thinking about range, think
about how well you can cover the court. In this example, two players in serve
receive, this player is standing really deep near the endline. If this player can
play a ball, this serve is short and that player has really good range. Some
players are better at taking the short serve and they are better at the shorter serve than they are at the deep serve. So you need to figure out which serve you are
most comfortable passing. If you are more comfortable starting deep and
coming in short then that’s what you should do. If you are comfortable
starting short and moving back in as server is serving. And you can pass the deep
ball on that ball. And you’re good at passing the deep serve in that
situation, then that’s what you could do. What’s important is to constantly be
testing your range. If this player isn’t comfortable moving deep to pass then
starting deep could be a better strategy. However, if they’re more comfortable
moving back as they pass then you can start shorter and then move back
as they’re serving. So what you want to be doing is you want to be trying to
figure out your range and figure out what your range is. Here’s an example why
this is important. If this player can easily get a ball that’s served in front of
them, they should move back. They should start further back. It doesn’t make any
sense for them to start so close. Especially if they struggle passing the
deep serve. So if you’re more comfortable moving foward when you pass, then start deeper. Serve
receive is usually a game between the server and the receiver. For example,
if you want to be served short then stand deeper. If you prefer to be served
deeper, stand close. And maybe you can bait the server into serving you deep.
